Electra Heart is the second studio album by Marina Diamandis, released under her previous stage name 'Marina and the Diamonds' on April 27, 2012.

On April 29, 2022, Electra Heart celebrated its 10th anniversary with the Platinum Blonde Edition, which was released digitally and as a limited edition 2LP pink vinyl.

Background[]

In December 2009, prior to the release of The Family Jewels, Marina wanted to do a re-release like Lady Gaga's "The Fame Monster",[1] however, this was quickly scrapped in favour of a full studio album. Her initial idea for her second album was die Life, a "dark electronic pop record", with Marina joking it was something "Britney Spears would have made if she were goth."[2] Her plans also including only working with one producer[3], potentially becoming "less commercial",[4] as she didn't care if there were "no singles" off the album.[5]

At some point Marina then intended to do a side project under the name "Electra Heart,"[6] when she was told by her manager it wasn't possible,[7] she merged the projects.

Inspiration[]

In an interview with The National News, Marina explained how she was inspired to write the album after a relationship in which she felt "unwanted" and "unlovable", wanting to "personify love and the bitter misery of heartbreak", using the Electra Heart concept to "flip the situation around":[8]

If you've had your heart broken, the last thing you want to do is go out there and give your heart to someone new, for fear of it happening again. Hence you become a heartbreaker - someone who screws other people over for fun. It's refreshing!

But clarifying: "there are only two or three songs on the record specifically about that certain boy, but that experience set the tone for the whole album". Marina has stated these songs are Lies,[9] and Starring Role.[10]

Diamandis also said:[11] "I think I'm quite attracted to artifice, and to deconstructing artifice so I've been very inspired by it this album." Artifice is defined as "clever or cunning devices or expedients (a means of attaining an end, especially one that is convenient but possibly improper or immoral), especially as used to trick or deceive others."

In the same interview, when asked if the album was about the "American Dream" like The Family Jewels, she said:[12]

I don't think it's that fascinating to me anymore, [the "American Dream"], because I've already explored that. It's more about the reality of America that's interesting to me, actually the reality of every day life. I like how pop music projects an image of pop singers, so that it creates such a disparity between the real person, when they're not a singer when they're at home, and the singer who's on stage, there's a very dualistic nature there, and I like to play with that for some reason.

Electra Heart[]

For information on "Electra Heart" as a character click here.

In August 2011, in an interview with PopJustice, Marina initially explained the "character" she played as:[13]

Electra Heart is the antithesis of everything that I stand for. And the point of introducing her and building a whole concept around her is that she stands for the corrupt side of American ideology, and basically that's the corruption of yourself. My worst fear — that's anyone's worst fear — is losing myself and becoming a vacuous person. And that happens a lot when you're very ambitious.

However in October, Marina told NME:[14]

It's not an alter ego. It's how an actor plays a part, a character they're playing. Whatever is happening to me is happening to her, because I am her. Though I definitely meant what I said about Electra Heart being the antithesis of me, it's not as primitive as that. The whole concept was inspired by realising an Aristotle book called Poetics.* It's about analysing Greek Tragedy, and I saw so many parallels between that and Hollywood that I realised old Hollywood is our modern-day mythology, people like Marilyn and Elvis. It's more about discovering a glittering underbelly of American society than, 'Oh, woe is me, I tried to get famous and it didn't work out how I thought, people CRITISED ME.'

*Marina quoted this book as a caption on the Electra Heart Tumblr:[15] "The plot is what the tragedy is there for! Not the character. And that is the most important thing of all"- Aristotle: "Poetics"

Name[]

Twitter (15 Nov 2010) 001 (Cropped)

Tweet: Electric Heart. (15 Nov 2010)

Marina came up with the name in November 2010, with the intention of using it for online handles,[16] on the 15th she tweeted "Electric Heart",[17] possibly the exact date she thought of the name.

Although sometimes deemed a reference to the 'electronic' sound of the album as well as an allegory of the electric heart that can be turned on and off, Marina explained to NME:[18]

It's the perfect combination of Greek history and Hollywood pin-ups. 'Electra' has the same meaning as my middle name, Lambrini – the one who is full of light. And 'Heart' – it's all about being very shut off from love, and being too proud to admit it.

Electra Heart can then be translated to "Light Heart" or "light hearted" which means "amusing and entertaining."

Composition[]

In 2010, whilst working on Die Life, Marina was initially very against co-writing with anyone, and wanted to work with one producer. However, after an "epiphany" in February 2011,[19] Marina wrote Fear and Loathing alone, calling it "a turning point" in her life, after which she stopped being a "bitter person" and began to work with new people and try new things.[20] A sentiment she expanded on for PopJustice:[21]

Yes I think it [Radioactive] does [sound like a 2011-era hit single] and it's not something I've done before. If this was a year ago I don't mind saying now that I would have been, like, "no way am I doing this". I was not even up for working with anyone. This is why these two songs fit really well together actually, because 'Fear & Loathing' is about genuinely not feeling bitter or crazy or jealous any more (nervous laugh) and actually feeling a lot better off for it. And so I've been working with a lot of other people.

Writing[]

Marina x Rick Nowels

Marina with Rick Nowels (Jan 2011)

Marina said she found pop songs, because of their simple lyrics, harder to write, and why she co-wrote with the likes of Dr. Luke.[22]

In October 2011, Marina said: "I will have a lot of songs on this album that probably won't go on it, I have too many now, so I'll be giving stuff away [to other artists]."[23] Later telling Planet Notion in 2012, she "ended up with" "about 22" songs.[24]

In an interview with Nylon for the tenth anniversary of Electra Heart, Marina reflected on the impact Electra Heart had on her writing process:[25]

[Working with pop producers] definitely changed how quickly I wrote. If I'm writing on my own, it can take probably a week to two weeks to finish a song, but with Rick [Nowels], for example, I pretty much finished "Bubblegum Bitch" in a day. [..] I do find with co-writing, it's not all one and the same. It really depends who you're writing with. My process with Dr. Luke or Stargate, who were the biggest pop writers of that time, was just incredibly different to Rick. That was a huge learning curve for me. With Rick, you have to be a really strong songwriter, because he sits you down, he's on his piano, and he'll just start playing chords. You basically have to start saying something on the spot, there's no, "Oh, I'll go and work on my lyrics for 20 minutes." You have to come up with goods, and I really flourished with that kind of process. With Dr. Luke or Stargate, I would go into a backroom for two hours on my own, and then I would go back to them and basically play them on my laptop what I had done, and then they would help me edit it. They were just so hugely successful and talented at the time, that I knew that my label really wanted it to work with them. And it did, we produced some really great songs. But I don't know if I would say that it was as natural a fit of say with Rick, where you're creating from scratch — you're not getting played beats and then sent to write on your own in a backroom. But, it all really informed my process as a writer and it definitely made me a better writer in the long term.

Production[]

Marina and Greg Kurstin

Marina with Greg Kurstin (Mar 2010)

Starring Role was the first song to be written specifically for Electra Heart, instead of die Life, and signalled the direction Marina was going for sonically, with its "cold and emotive" production.[26]

Marina described the production as "electropop"[27] and "more restrained" than her previous album.[28] Unlike her previous album, Diamandis' didn't have much of a role in the production, as she hired "massive pop producers" in hope of US radio hits, something she couldn't produce herself.[29] Joking in a separate interview: "[Dr. Luke]'s not going to let me co-produce a record when he's had 22 hit singles. That's never going to fucking happen! [laughs]." [30]

In August 2011, Marina said:[31]

I've been working with Dr Luke, Stargate, and I've learned SO much. And I've done an album — well, it's nearly done — that's so exciting and feels like a real album. I just think, if I'd sat in my bedroom and carried on as I was because I thought that equalled credibility, I don't think I would have produced a good album. With Stargate the production is the antithesis of everything I've done so far, but I think you have to try [line breaks up]. And I really like the song now. I've really grown into it! [..] And also, my stuff gets remixed to oblivion, so I was like, why DON'T I do a dance song?

For Interview Magazine, Marina was asked who she decided to work with:[32]

Nine songs off the album were made by two people—Rick Nowels did five and Greg Kurstin did four, and they were the main collaborators, which I'm really glad about actually, because I really wanted the whole thing to gel and feel like a body of work. So after that, I did two songs with Dr. Luke and two with Liam Howe.

Release and Promotion[]

Singles[]

Inspired by the six-single promotional campaign for Teenage Dream (2010) by Katy Perry, Marina planned to release six singles from Electra Heart,[33] however, only four tracks, and three official singles, were released before she finished promoting the album. Radioactive was released prior to the album being completed, as a standalone promotional single.[34] Primadonna was the first official, and the lead, single. Power & Control was released as the second official single, and How to Be a Heartbreaker as the third and final single.

Homewrecker was released on her website, as a reward for signing up to her mailing list. E.V.O.L was released as a reward for signing up to Marina's mailing list before February 13, 2013. Just Desserts was also a free download, released on May 1, 2013, however was never intended for Electra Heart.[35]

Scrapped Repackage[]

Planet Notion: There's no title track on Electra Heart but does such a song exist, in the same vein as The Family Jewels, which was left off the first album?[36]

Yes! It's weird because I consider Electra Heart to be a multi-media project so there are songs and videos that won't be to the mainstream liking but they are still part of the overall endeavour. Maybe I'll do a CD at the end of the project, which will have everything on it. I think the track Electra Heart will probably be an opener for my final live tour.

Platinum Blonde Edition[]

On April 20, 2022 Nylon posted an interview with Diamandis, producer Rick Nowels, photographer and director Casper Balslev, amongst others, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Electra Heart.[37] On the 23rd, Marina tweeted:[38]

Wednesday is Electra Heart day. Her 10 year anniversary. ♡

On the 25th, fans started to notice Spotify ads for "Electra Heart (Platinum Blonde Edition)"[39][40] On the 26th and 27th, fans discovered pre-orders for a pink double LP vinyl, which included 17 tracks. 15 of the deluxe tracks, but Buy the Stars and Radioactive were replaced by title track and E.V.O.L.[41] Marina clarified that the vinyl was missing Buy the Stars and Radioactive as there was no space, but the digital edition would have all tracks.[42] On the 27th, the 10th anniversary, Marina posted to Twitter:[43]

Happiest 10 year anniversary to Electra Heart."Electra Heart: The Platinum Blonde Edition" is out on vinyl this Friday.
There is so much I could say about this album! I'll write a book about it one day.
It was a thrilling creative journey that was met with a lot of passion from fans and a lot of (hilarious) rancor from press at the time. I'm so glad she got her justice 10 years later. 2 platinum records and one gold, all thanks to you.
To celebrate, I'm gonna post a few of my favourite "Archetypes" photos.

On the 29th, the vinyl and digital version were released.

Tour[]

Main Article: The Lonely Hearts Club Tour

In Interview Magazine, Marina shared her upcoming plans for her tour:[44]

I am so excited! It's gonna go into a completely different world. Physically, I think it's going to be more like theater. The stage will be like a scene—I want a living room setting: a chaise lounge, a flickering, old, disgusting motel TV, a hat stand with various clothing I can switch into with each song. For me, it's like about being able to be resourceful and adapt to each venue. If I'm in a 500-capacity or 5000, it's going to be the same. But I like the idea of turning it into a play as opposed to a "music show"—it's not like, jazz-hands theatricality. You become involved with the character.

HEARTCORE[]

In December 2012, Marina revealed she was working on a fan film titled "HEARTCORE" (sometimes stylised as "HEARTC♡RE"), which would document her tour across the USA.[45] A few months later, in March 2013, she shared a preview,[46] however, the documentary never came to fruition.

On June 23, 2015, Diamandis was asked what happened to the documentary, and whether something similar could be expected in the future, to which she responded:[47]

No, the buggers used any good footage I had in a tour video for "HTBAH". C'est la vie. It was going to be a great project but the material I had didn't feel close to what I wanted to show. I never want to put something out that i am not fully happy with. I wanted it to be a doc about you, not me.

In an interview with MusicOMH:[48]

One of the key things about the whole Electra Heart project is the visuals and artwork, and there is a clear theme developed throughout all the imagery, a theme of faded glamour and stylised grandeur with Marina prominent throughout. It is her direction and influence that runs through all the imagery, she says: "I just took a lot of care with the visual side of things. I know what I want this time and I have a very specific idea of who I am as an artist and what I want to portray myself as.

In another interview she said the visuals were inspired by the 1976 film "Valley of the Dolls".[49]

The Archetypes[]

Main Article: The Archetypes

In August 2011, Marina said each song would be granted a music video, set in 70s America, about a character called Electra Heart. An idea inspired by the parallels between Greek Mythology and Old Hollywood.[50] She had intended initially to have 15 parts,[51] with 5 of those in the same vein as The Archetypes and Su-Barbie-A,[52] with the missing three presumably being the other three Archetypes.

In October 2011, Marina said she intended to do an exhibition for a gallery, with films she was making for the album and photography collections.[53] She said the first part of the campaign would focus on suburbia and housewives, however she had already Fear and Loathing a "Beauty Queen" track and Radioactive, an "Idle Teen" track.

Outtakes[]

Note:
This is an abridged version of events, for more (sourced) information, go to each song page.

E.V.O.L, used as Part 8 of 'The Archetypes', and sent as a free download to those that were subscribed to Marina's mailing list before February 13, 2013, then only available on SoundCloud.[58] It was included on the Platinum Blonde Edition of Electra Heart, to celebrate the 10th anniversary.

Electra Heart, the title track, and used as Part 11, the final part, of 'The Archetypes'. Due to unknown reasons the song's released was delayed and was released in 2014,[59] after the Electra Heart era ended. It was included on the Platinum Blonde Edition of Electra Heart, to celebrate the 10th anniversary.

Eternity, never released, produced in Stargate's June 2011 sessions, it was possibly scrapped for Primadonna and Valley of the Dolls as they share similar lyrics and were produced in the latter part of 2011.

Double Life, never released, produced by an unknown producer in 2011.

Interludes[]

The Archetypes and Su-Barbie-A were created for The Archetypes video project, and not meant for the album.[60]

die Life[]

Miss Y and Scab and Plaster were originally created for die Life, whilst other tracks made it onto the album, Miss Y was only registered as a demo,[61] suggesting she didn't want to finish it for the new album. Marina stated Scab and Plaster was "not part of the concept" and "a Family Jewels throwback".[62]

Jealousy was initially for The Family Jewels, and then for die Life, her initial second album, which caused confusion when she told fans it would be on her second album.[63]

Non-Album[]

Just Desserts, originally The Other Foot, a song by GhostPoet featuring Marina; Diamandis reworked the song with Charli XCX "just for fun".[64] The track was only released on YouTube and SoundCloud, and was never part of the Electra Heart project.

Bump in the Night, whilst part of Stargate's Electra Heart sessions, the theme of ghosts and the line "calm down Marina" instead of "Electra" means the song wasn't intended for the album. Bubblegum Bitch and Electra Heart were written before Bump in the Night, and include the phrase Electra Heart.

Trivia[]

  • The first promotional CDs sent out in the US had a different tracklist.[65]
