Shampain is a single by Marina Diamandis, released under her previous stage name 'Marina and the Diamonds'. Appearing on her first studio album, The Family Jewels, it is the 2nd track on the album, and was released as the 6th single.
The song was written by Marina, Liam Howe and Pascal Gabriel, and produced by Howe and Gabriel.
Background[]
The demo of Shampain, The Shampain Sleeper, was available on Marina's MySpace sometime before September 2008.[1]
On co-writing, she said:[2]
❝ I hate [co-writing] so I do it because it's so challenging for me. As soon as I do it I am really pleased that I have. I've had the pleasure of working with three great people... 'Shampain' was written with Liam Howe, Pascal Gabriel and we had a lot of fun doing it. ❞
In 2012, Marina was asked which song she was sick of performing live. She chose Shampain:[3]
❝ I hate it, I hate it so much. I hate it as a song, I hate to play it, the only time I like to play it is at a festival, if we do like a massive round up at the end. [...] I literally loathe it. [...] I didn't even like it before, I didn't even like it when I wrote it, and I just got forced to put it on the album! [laughs] It's funny, with writers you write stuff that you wouldn't necessarily like or that fits you and that song should've been given to Kylie, in my brain. But it sounded like a big pop song but it charted at 104 so it wasn't that good! ❞
On October 11, 2010, Shampain was released as the sixth and final single of The Family Jewels, however, in the United Kingdom and Ireland only.
Registration[]
On ASCAP/BMI the song was registered once,[4] and twice on GEMA,[5] first as "Sham Pain", an original work, with the registration status "1" which indicates a work that can be distributed, then as "Shampain", a modification, with the registration status "2", which indicates a work not yet distributable. Both versions on GEMA have different work numbers, indicating this is likely the rerecording of Shampain's demo which appeared on the album sampler. Each registration lists Pascal Gabriel and Liam Howe as co-writers.
On GEMA and ASCAP the song is registered as Sham Pain, with Shampain and Shampaign as alternate titles.
Trivia[]
- The black slip Marina is wearing in the music video is the same as Fear and Loathing.
- Shampain was used in an episode of the BBC Switch teen soap opera The Cut in December 2009, when the song had the working title of The Shampain Sleeper in 2009.
Meaning[]
❝ ['Shampain' is about] the depressing side of getting drunk, the obliteration side of having a good time. This was actually the first co-write that I ever did... It was good to write a simpler pop song because when I write on my own the melodies are all over the place. It was good to do something a little bit lighter, and this probably is my lightest track on a record. It's about insomnia and the joys of champagne. ❞
