Marina and the Diamonds Wiki

Gold is a promotional single by Marina Diamandis, released under her previous stage name 'Marina and the Diamonds'. Appearing on her third studio album, FROOT, it is the 6th track on the album, and was released promotionally as the 6th and final 'FROOT of the Month'.

The song was written by Marina alone and produced by David Kosten.

Gold was represented an orange Gold (fanpack) - Orange in the 'Froot of the Month' campaign, and paired alongside Savages on Marina's website during the era.[1]

Background[]

Marina wrote Gold out of frustration in a countryside hotel in Magdeburg, Germany, while on a day off from touring with Coldplay.[2] Marina toured in Germany in September 2012.[3]

In December 2012, Marina tweeted "Girls just wanna have fund$".[4] The line was used in "lyrics" on her website, speculated to be an ode to Cindy Lauper's "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" rather than demo lyrics. Marina also released merch with the line in 2013.[5]

Trivia[]

  • For unknown reasons, on the vinyl, Gold is paired with Forget, contradicting the 'Froot of the Month' campaign.
  • The line "I'm a million dollars in the hole" was inspired by being told she "bankrupted" her label due to Electra Heart videos.[6] Marina later clarified in 2015:[7]

I made a joke because I have a terrible sense of humour. It wasn't true, but it's followed me for so long.

Meaning[]

Marina expressed the song's moral is to not "sell-out" one's own identity to capitalism, regardless of monetary benefits. In an interview with We Need to Talk, she stated the industry pushed an image of pop-stardom on her with album Electra Heart, and spoke of how frustrating working with a large team of pop hit writers could be when being pushed towards a certain sound appealing for a mass demographic.[8] FROOT was written entirely by Marina and produced by David Kosten.

Lyrics[]

[Verse 1]
You've got it in the palm of your hands (In your hands)
It's slipping through your fingers like sand (Like sand)
'Cause they don't understand who you are (Who you are)
Doesn't matter long as I am your star, star

[Pre-Chorus]
Yeah, I know that I need the gold
But what I love can't be bought or sold

[Chorus 1]
Don't think I want what I used to want
Don't think I need what I used to need
Don't think I want what I used to want
Don't think I see what I used to see

[Verse 2]
I've been waiting (Waiting), waiting for the penny to drop
(To drop, to drop, to drop)
I've been working (Working), Working to get back what I lost
(I lost, I lost) I lost
But whatever happens I'll be okay (I'll be okay)
'Cause fortune's running out of my veins, my veins (Uh-huh)

[Pre-Chorus]
You can't take away the Midas' touch
So you better make a way for a Greek gold rush

[Chorus 2]
Don't think I want what I used to want
Don't think I need what I used to need
Don't think I want what I used to want
Don't think I see what I used to see
In El Dorado, your gold
To Colorado, can't be bought or sold

[Bridge]
Now, there's no moral to this story
But I can hear my freedom calling me, calling me

[Outro]
I don't care that everybody knows
I'm a million dollars in the hole
I don't care that everybody knows
Baby, I don't even want your gold
From El Dorado, your gold
To Colorado, can't be bought or sold

(Gold) Rush
(Gold) Rush
Free, free, free, free
Free, free, free, I am free, free
