Jealousy is a song by Marina Diamandis, intended for her first studio album, The Family Jewels, and later her scrapped second studio album, die Life.

The song was written by Marina, Ash Howes and Richard "Biff" Stannard, who also produced the song.

Background[]

Posted to Marina's MySpace in April 2009,[1] Jealousy was intended to be featured on The Family Jewels,[2] however, it did not make the cut. It was then repurposed as a die Life track. However, it again did not make the cut.

Diamandis performed the song live 59 times from 2010 to 2011, and three days in a row in February 2012.[3] However, this was prior to the release of Electra Heart, and not during The Lonely Hearts Club Tour.

In an October 2011 webcam chat, when asked whether Jealousy would be featured on her then-new album, Marina said:[4] "No, I don't think so".

In an interview with Planet Notion in March 2012, Marina stated:[5]

ā Jealousy, was supposed to be on The Family Jewels and then, performing it live on tour last year you talked about it being on the new album.

Yeah, and then I just scrapped it. Poor old Jealousy! [laughs] I hope another artist picks it up. I would like that. It's a really good song. āž

Meaning[]

Prior to a live performance on November 4, 2010, Marina told the audience:[6]

ā You know, girls, when your boyfriend talks about beautiful women all the time. It really sucks. [laughs] Guys, don't do it. [laughs] āž

Trivia[]

  • When performed live, Jealousy is played in a tempo of 164 BPM, being slightly slower than its studio version of 168.[7]

Connections[]

The theme of leaving first: "I never say a word, leave you before you leave me" links the song to:

  • Radioactive: "But, baby, I'm the one who left you, you're not the one who left me."

Lyrics[]

[Verse 1]
I'm embarrassed to confess
I am a jealous girlfriend
I want you to belong to me
But I think they'd call that jealousy

[Pre-Chorus]
I never say a word
In case I come off needy
I never say a word
Leave you before you leave me

[Chorus]
What is taking over me? Jealousy
A bubbling inside of me, it's jealousy
Controlling me, it's coming after me
It's so easy when you don't belong to me

[Verse 2]
Is it you or is it me?
When you talk about beauty
Makes me feel so ugly
But I think they'd call that jealousy

[Pre-Chorus]
I never say a word
In case I come off needy
I never say a word
Leave you before you leave me

[Chorus]
What is taking over me? Jealousy
A bubbling inside of me, it's jealousy
Controlling me, it's coming after me
It's so easy when you don't belong to me

[Bridge]
I think I'm fine, I think I'm tough
Until I go and fall in love
I always try hard to conceal
But the more I hide the worse I feel

Uh oh, uh uh, uh oh, jealousy
Uh oh, uh uh, uh oh, jealousy

[Chorus]
What is taking over me? Jealousy
A bubbling inside of me, it's jealousy
Controlling me, it's coming after me
It's so easy when you don't belong to me

Uh oh, uh oh, uh oh, jealousy
Uh oh, uh oh, uh oh, it's jealousy
Uh oh, uh oh, uh oh, jealousy
Uh oh, uh oh, uh oh, it's jealousy
