Mermaid vs. Sailor (stylized as Mermaid vs Sailor) is the first demo extended play (EP) by Marina Diamandis, released under her previous stage name 'Marina and the Diamonds'.

She entirely self-composed and produced it using GarageBand. The EP was self-released on November 23, 2007, and sold as handmade CD-Rs through her MySpace page.

Background[]

Diamandis initially paid an artist to produce her songs. However, not liking the sound, she decided to write and self-produce the EP entirely in her room.[1] Plastic Rainbow was the first song she ever wrote, leading her to want to become a songwriter.[2]

Note:
The following dates are compiled from first song mentions via comments, meaning some could have possibly been released earlier.

On June 3, 2007, Hermit the Frog's demo was the first self-produced song to be shared on her MySpace.[3] On the 22nd, Horror Pop was on the website.[3] On July 7, Simplify was posted on her page.[3]

On October 28 of the same year, The Common Cold was shared on her MySpace.[3] Two weeks later, on November 11, Hermit the Frog's EP version was on the site,[3] prior to the full project being released two weeks after.

Outtakes[]

In her MySpace era, Marina created multiple songs. Those that can be considered to be outtakes of Mermaid vs. Sailor are listed below:

On June 4, 2012, 12 songs surfaced online through a fan-made album titled "Give Me the Money!",[4] one of the tracks being Marina's cover of Perfect Stranger (incorrectly labelled as "Katyb."), which was recorded in 2010,[5] and Happy Meal, which was created after the EP was finished.[6]

The rest of the fan-made album is speculated to be Mermaid vs. Sailor outtakes, as the songs are all believed to have been produced in 2007, and share similar topics with the EP, such as nautical themes (The Common Cold), dysfunctional relationships (StarlightPerfect-Oh and Silver Wall), family, (Hot, Cross Bun and Hubba), views on society (Supermodel's Legs and Lonely Bones) and gluttony (Pancake Karma and Where Diamonds Grow). All tracks were also self-produced by Marina using GarageBand.

Possible Outtakes[]

The following songs were all produced by an unknown artist in 2006:

Marina, not liking the sound, decided to self-produce her music.[1] Plastic Rainbow's demo was originally in the same style, which was then reworked and featured on Mermaid vs. Sailor. It is possible stripped back versions of the other five EP tracks exist.[speculated] However, there is no evidence of this, as MySpace has had several data wipes.
