Starlight is a song by Marina Diamandis, released under her previous stage name 'Marina and the Diamonds' on MySpace, and intended for her debut studio album, The Family Jewels.

The studio version was written by Marina, and produced by Liam Howe, whilst the demo was solely produced by Diamandis.

Background[]

The song was written and produced in 2007, presumably intended for her self-produced EP, Mermaid vs. Sailor.[speculated] This version was leaked on Tumblr on June 4, 2012,[1] along with ten other 2007 tracks and one 2010 cover of Perfect Stranger in a fan-made EP titled "Give Me the Money!", a line taken from Where Diamonds Grow.

Starlight was then reworked with Liam Howe in 2008, intended for The Family Jewels, and made available for streaming on Marina's MySpace. Its title was mentioned in her profile sidebar.[2] The fan-site Rockabilly places the song's studio version approximately on June 7, 2008.[3]

Registration[]

The song was once registered on ASCAP/BMI,[4] and three times on registry site GEMA,[5] each time with no co-writers.

Each version registered on GEMA is under status "2", which indicates a work not yet distributable. The first registration is under the frame type "original", with the rest being under "modification" and slightly different publishers, indicating the song was not finished, but given an ISCW Number.[6]

Trivia[]

  • Starlight was made available for download on Marina's MySpace in 2008, being later taken down and resurfacing in low quality in 2011.[citation needed]

Connections[]

  • Associating "fools" with "family jewels" links the song to:

Official Versions[]

Note:
A fan-made edit of the studio version with the original intro has falsely circulated as the "studio" version. Lyrics of the studio version are taken from an archived 2009 site.[7]

Lyrics[]

[Verse 1]
You, oh you
Had a sad urge to be wanted by fools
Welcoming girls that would be
Slippin', trippin', enveloping your family jewels
You chose to grow your nose
'Cause deep down you knew, I knew, you knew, I knew
That I'd up and run than you could come
Said I was too good for you

[Verse 2]
Wake up little Susie
It's bad news when you hear a guy cry
You spilt the beans in January
Timed it perfectly after your granny died
(Tsk-tsk-tsk)

[Pre-Chorus 1]
You knew I wouldn't shoot a man when he was down
Well done, Pinocchio, you told a lie
I wouldn't take advantage of a cut-up heart
At such a vulnerable time, you tell me
"I'm so lonely, won't you hold me?"

Stars shine only
Up it's only light
Old light, it's been dead for a long time
Long time
And with time, time

[Chorus]
Stars and love burn bright
Till they're ready to die
The broken spend their lives
Staring at the sky

[Verse 3]
Now, it's time
Bury the hatchet and bury it deep
You've a massive heart, but you're a fucked up kid
And we sow what we reap

[Pre-Chorus 2]
Woah, 'cause we grew up as solitary souls
Sometimes it's better to be on your own
I need time just to roam, roam, roam
Find a place I can call home

Love is like starlight
Even when a star dies
You can still see it shine
But it's only old light
Old light, it's been dead for a long time, time
With time, time

[Chorus]
Stars and love burn bright
Till they're ready to die
The broken spend their lives
Staring at the sky

[Bridge]
Oh, but, it is just old light
Completing its last flight
Across the velvet nights
Stars burn bright till they die
The love bites in the sky
Love is like starlight
Love is starlight

[Chorus 1]
Stars and love burn bright
Till they're ready to die
The broken spend their nights
Staring at the sky

[Verse 1]
You, oh you
Had a sad urge to be wanted by fools
Welcoming girls that would be
Slippin', trippin', enveloping your family jewels
You chose to grow your nose
But deep down you knew, I knew, you knew, I knew
That I'd up and run quicker than good boys come
They said I was too good for you

[Verse 2]
Wake up little Susie
It's bad news when you hear a guy cry
You spilt the beans in January
Timed it perfectly after your granny died
(Tsk-tsk-tsk)

[Pre-Chorus 1]
You knew I wouldn't shoot a man when he was down
Well done, Pinocchio, you made a lie
Why would you take advantage of a cut-up heart
At such a vulnerable time?
You said "I'm so lonely, won't you hold me?"
"I'm so lonely, come close, baby, hold me"

Love is like starlight
See it when a star dies
It continues to shine
But it's only old light
Old light, it's been dead for a long time, long time
And time, time

[Chorus]
Stars and love burn bright
Till they're ready to die
Broken spend their nights
Staring at the sky

If love enters your life
It leaves a stain inside your sky
And this will lead you to believe
That it is still alive

But it is just old light
Completing its last flight
Across a velvet night
Stars burn bright till they die

[Post-Chorus]
Like love bites in the sky
Love is like starlight
Love is starlight

[Verse 4]
I took all our favourite songs
Played them and I made them my own
I went to our favourite bars
And I drank in them alone

[Pre-Chorus 2]
Woah, 'cause I've grown up a solitary soul
Sometimes I think it's better on my own
I need time just to roam, roam, roam
Find one place I can call home

Love is like starlight
Even when a star dies
You can see it shine
But it's only old light
Old light, it's been dead for a long time, long time
Long time

[Chorus]
Stars and love burn bright
Till they're ready to die
The broken spend their nights
Staring at the sky

If love enters your life
It leaves a mark inside your sky
And this will lead you to believe
That it is still alive

But it is just old light
Completing its last flight
Across the velvet night
Stars burn bright till they die

[Post-Chorus]
Like love bites in the sky
Love is like starlight
Love is starlight
