The Common Cold is a song by Marina Diamandis, released under her previous stage name 'Marina and the Diamonds' on MySpace, and likely intended for her self-released EP, Mermaid vs. Sailor.

The song was written and produced by Marina alone.

Background[]

The Common Cold was first mentioned in MySpace comments on October 28, 2007,[1] suggesting it was made available for streaming on Marina's page during this time. Due to the date, it is likely a Mermaid vs. Sailor outtake.[speculated]

The song resurfaced on Tumblr on June 4, 2012,[2] along with ten other 2007 tracks and one 2010 cover of Perfect Stranger in a fan-made EP titled "Give Me the Money!", a line taken from Where Diamonds Grow.

Lyrics[]

[Spoken Intro]
[Coughing and sneezing]
There is no known cure for the common cold

[Verse 1]
You said, "Let's go on a break"
Sounded a little bit fake
Sounded like you just
Wanted to go on a date
Well, you don't need my permission
There's no point for me to keep wishing
You were more, more, more

[Pre-Chorus 1]
You're a world-class liar
I am a damn crier
Try to drag you higher
But the stars, they fracture
Now I'm piecing together a puzzle of your face
But the part for your heart, it never fits into place
(Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh, oh, oh, oh) Place

[Chorus]
Love is a turbulent sea
Are you scared to swim with me?
Swim past the fishermen's nets that have already tried
To trap you and me
I remember when you said
"There are plenty of other fish in the sea"
You said, "If this is love, then the current will
Bring you back, bring you back to me" (La-la-la-la-la)

[Post-Chorus]
(Bring you back to me)

[Verse 2]
Feeling a certain shame
Let myself be treated this way
No, this won't happen again, not over my dead body
Like two dumb dogs walkin' in circles
Got a feelin', was I just chasin' the wrong tail? (Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh)
Well, it's better havin' your head stuck up your ass, you can't sail

[Pre-Chorus 2]
He said, "You don't appreciate me"
Like a bastard on heat
Two weeks, I couldn't eat
But I made my pain discreet
Wouldn't sit the exams you wanted me to take
I'm above all your games, this shark won't fall for your bait
(Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh)
Plenty of fish in the sea
But I just wasn't hungry

[Chorus]
Love is a turbulent sea
Are you scared to swim with me?
Swim past the fishermen's nets that have already tried
To trap you and me
I remember when you said
"There are plenty of other fish in the sea"
You said, "If this is love, then the current will
Bring you back, bring you back to me"

[Outro]
(Bring you back to)
(Bring you back to me)
